Rob Gronkowski Broke His Arm While The Patriots Were Running Up The Score

new england patriots tight end rob gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski broke his forearm on an extra point with 3:55 left that put the Patriots up 59-24, and today some people are hammering Bill Belichick for keeping him in the game.

But in reality the Gronk injury was just a freak thing, and there's nothing the Pats could have done to avoid it. Peter King explains:

Coaches have 45 active players each game. They don't have a "second team'' of the point-after-try unit. The PAT is one of the most risk-free plays in football. Rodney Harrison, the former Patriots safety now in the NBC studio with me on Sunday nights, didn't get taken off the kickoff team in routs. And Tony Dungy, who coached the Colts and Bucs, told me: "Jeff Saturday was my right guard on the PAT team, and I'd never think of taking him off. All my years in football, I never heard anyone, never heard Chuck Noll saying, 'Well, we better get Jack Ham off the PAT team.' It's not something I'd question."

But given Belichick's penchant for beating the life out of teams, people are still saying Gronk's injury was a direct result of Belichick's bloodlust. Here's George Bretherton of the New York Times:

Was it wise to have one of the league’s most valuable players (Gronkowski) lined up for a play at what was essentially a meaningless point in the game?

(...)

But even if the injury causes him to miss the rest of the regular season, it will most likely not change Belichick’s coaching philosophy. And it might even result in a fine from the league office.

Twitter was also in a bit of a tizzy over the supposed karmic nature of the injury.

It's true that New England kept its foot on the gas longer than the normal team yesterday, but it's not all that egregious that Gronk was on the field for a seemingly harmless play.

There's no official word on how long Gronk will be out, but King says it'll be a month or so.

In 2012, Rob Gronkowski partied like crazy after the Patriots lost the Super Bowl. A lot of people criticized him saying it was inappropriate to be having so much fun after such a brutal loss.

This year, Gronk wasn't in the Super Bowl but he still partied with his shirt off. In this video that TMZ posted, Gronk is dancing on stage with some friends at XS nightclub in Las Vegas and tackles his friend to the ground, looks like he lands on his hurt arm, gets back up, and keep dancing.

Never change, Gronk.

Patriots Player Explains Why Rob Gronkowski's Partying Is Harmless

rob gronkowski partying at the super bowl

Rob Gronkowski is the NFL's preeminent party boy.

He hung out with a porn star during his bye week. He spent an extended amount of time at Spring Break. He danced shirtless-ly after two-straight Super Bowls.

But even though he takes a lot of flack for his very public carousing, he's pretty much harmless.

Patriots offensive lineman Logan Mankins put it better than we could in conversation with Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston today:

"Gronk is a big meathead that likes to party and play football" is an excellent sentence.

This comes a day after his teammate Logan Mankins hit back at critics of Gronkowski's hard-partying by saying, "Gronk is a big meathead who likes to party and play football."

Much like rapper Drake, Rob Gronkowski realizes how he is perceived and has decided to own that persona and have fun with it.

Rob Gronkowski visited this SportsCenter set at ESPN this morning. And while he was there he took a few moments to try his hand as an anchor and call some highlights.

Let's just say, it's a good thing he is a great football player. His commentary was filled with memorable lines like "let's see what we got here,""he didn't make it rain that time, what the heck?" and "it's on like gronky kong!"

But as with most things in Gronk's life, he did have fun. And at the same time, he showed off his new goatee...

The NFL Is Cracking Down On Celebrations This Year

rob gronkowski gronk spike rule ban

Reports came out that NFL referees working training camps were warning players of the league's desire to penalize players' celebrations that came too close to taunting with a 15-yard penalty.

The NFL is encouraging its referees to make a 2013 rule against player celebration a point of emphasis this year, but the rule might not be as harsh as everyone first called it out to be. Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 reads:

"Violations of (b) will be penalized if any of the acts are committed directly at an opponent. These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation); or dancing.”

At first we thought this was bad news for Patriots tight end and celebrator extraordinaire Rob Gronkowski, who marked most of his 38 career touchdowns with his patented one-handed monster slam.

However, the NFL has reminded the media of the "directly at an opponent" part of the rule. Deadspin also learned from the NFL that the crackdown on celebrating will only apply on non-scoring plays. The NFL is trying to prevent incidents that slow the rate of play. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the average number of plays per game have increased every year over the past five seasons, up to 128.4 last year. With more rookies coming into the league as products of no-huddle, Oregon-style offenses, the move makes sense.

So after a flirtation with peril, it seems the Gronk Spike is safe, as long as the slam is directed at no on in particular, and he only does it when he scores. We look forward to seeing more of this:

The Patriots Reportedly Gave Rob Gronkowski An Unnecessary Arm Surgery, And That's Why He's Still Injured

rob gronkowski new england patriots

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has yet to play in 2013 after having four surgeries on his broken forearm in a seven-month period.

According to a report from Mike Petraglia of WEEI, the entire thing could have avoided if the team let the break heal on its own.

Petraglia reports that the team first performed surgery on the tight end last fall in hopes that he could be back for the 2012 playoffs. Gronkowski came back in Week 17 and re-broke the same arm, requiring another surgery. After two more surgeries to deal with an infection, he has still yet to step onto the field in 2013.

If this is true, it's a possible explanation for an earlier report that Gronkowski's "inner circle" didn't want him playing until Week 6, no matter what the team doctors said.

Gronkowski's status for this Sunday is still up in the air.

It's clear that the Patriots need him. Tom Brady's historic streak of games with at least one touchdown pass ended last week in a 13-6 loss to Cincinnati. While the Pats are still one of the top teams in the league, they're still a tier below Denver and Seattle without weapons like Gronkowski on the perimeter.

Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady

He doesn't have much to say about deflated footballs, but ask New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski about his dating life and he'll give you an earful.

When radio producer Outsider Mike from "SVP and Russillo" asked Gronkowski about using Tinder, the athlete acknowledged it was hard to convince prospective dates he was the true Gronk.

"No one believed it was me ... it was fun, though!" he said.

He also had four solid pieces of advice to anyone looking to swipe right on love.

1. Don't be picky. Gronk advises swiping right on everyone to increase your chances of finding someone who's into you.

2. Use pickup lines. He suggests Googling "Tinder pick up lines."

3. Have fun! It's not whether you win or lose; it's how you play the game.

4. Flex. E! reports: "Gronk advised Mike to ask the ladies, 'Hey, do you work out, 'cause I'm ripped, I'm jacked,' and send them a picture with your shirt off. Something like that and they'll be like, 'Whoa, this guy is serious. I like him.'"

Rob Gronkowski hasn't spent a penny of the $16.3 million in NFL salary he has made in his career

Rob Gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski has made a little more than $16.3 million in five seasons playing for the New England Patriots and has saved all of it.

Peter King of theMMQB.com posted some excerpts from Gronkowski's upcoming autobiography, "It's Good to be Gronk." Among those excerpts was this tidbit on Gronk's thriftiness:

"To this day, I still haven’t touched one dime of my signing bonus or NFL contract money. I live off my marketing money and haven’t blown it on any big-money expensive cars, expensive jewelry or tattoos and still wear my favorite pair of jeans from high school."

By star athlete standards, Gronkowski did not make much money when he first entered the NFL as a second-round pick. His first contract included a $1.8 million signing bonus and his salaries during his first two seasons were $320,000 and $450,000, respectively, according to Spotrac.com.

However, that changed after his second season in the league when he signed a six-year, $54.0 million contract with an $8.0 million signing bonus, and yet it sounds like Gronk is still living like an underpaid rookie.

Gronk's endorsement deals have included BodyArmor SuperDrink and Dunkin' Donuts.
